Hussey backs declaration

Mike_hussey_scgMike Hussey told Grandstand he does not think Australia declared its second innings too early despite South Africa having shown its ability to chase down sizeable victory targets.

Australia set the Proteas 376 to win when it declared its second innings on 4 for 257 and the visitors reached 1 for 62 in their chase prior to stumps on day four.

The Proteas expressed surprised that Australia did not set a target in excess of 400 runs, a feat they have already achieved in the series when they reached 414 to win the opening Test in Perth by six wickets.

Third time lucky?

Grandstand's Glenn Mitchell ponders whether South Africa can again steal victory from under the noses of the Australians.

Doug_bollinger2Surely lightning will not strike the Australian team for the third time this summer.

With a day to play in this absorbing series between two of the sport's current heavyweights, a South African victory is the least likely result.

Mind you, they were also firmly in control of the opening two Tests for long periods of time before the Proteas conjured remarkable fight-backs to claim victories in Perth and Melbourne.

The Proteas will start day five at the SCG on 1 for 62, requiring a further 314 runs for victory, a clean sweep of the series and the official title of world number one.

Proteas not willing to predict SCG victory

Graeme_smith_scg2South Africa coach Mickey Arthur told Grandstand the Proteas will not know until tea on day five whether they have a chance of securing victory in the third and final Test against Australia.

The Proteas need a further 314 to win and secure a 3-0 series whitewash of Australia, having reached stumps on day four on 1 for 62.

However, the visitors are without captain Graeme Smith (pictured), who is sidelined with a broken finger, effectively meaning they are two wickets down in their pursuit of the victory target of 376.

Proteas facing mammoth task

Simon_katich_scg1South Africa needs a further 314 runs if it is to post an unlikely victory in the third and final Test against Australia at the SCG.

Hashim Amla and Neil McKenzie guided the Proteas to stumps on day four on 1 for 62 with makeshift opener Morne Morkel the only dismissal, the rangy paceman out for a duck to give Doug Bollinger his maiden Test wicket.

Australia had earlier set the Proteas 376 for victory, having declared its second innings on 4 for 257 during the final session.

Twenty20 not in competition with Tests: ICC

Twenty20_2International Cricket Council (ICC) president David Morgan told Grandstand the Twenty20 version of the game should not be viewed as a challenge to the sanctity of Test matches.

The growing popularity of Twenty20 cricket and the rise of competitions such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) has led to considerable speculation that Tests are losing their importance to players and appeal to supporters.

The paltry crowd numbers during Australia's recent four-Test tour of India, as compared to those which attended the IPL earlier in 2008, in particular added weight to the argument that Twenty20 has grown more popular than the five-day format, especially in the sub-continent.

You can listen to Morgan's interview with Grandstand's Glenn Mitchell and guest commentator Neil Manthorp during the third Test at the SCG below:
